"the idea that Cricket Australia can make them stroke their beards and reconsider the lot of women in Afghanistan is a liberal fantasy." South Africa was different. The government of the time used sport. The Taliban couldn't care less.

Surreal is just the new 'unbelievable' beloved of sports commentators who struggle with other adjectives to come up with.

Nice to know about the book launch, GH. I remember sending the original piece here to a bunch of people and all of them thought it was the most poignantly beautiful thing they had read in a long time. A friend is visiting Aus and I am trying to see if I can get the book through him. The very small difference between the DoBs of Jaz and Warnie gives me a whole new perspective on your Warnie writings. :) Cheers!

I'm sure I can fix him up if he has any trouble, EC.

Dreamlike would be listed as a synonym for surreal in most thesauruses though, would it not? And it seems cricketers use it in the ‘stuff of dreams’ category (playing against your childhood hero). I am less offended due to my indifference to surrealism, with the exception of Bunuel’s films and Man Ray’s pictures…

Terrific synopsis of the Taliban’s thoughts regarding CA’s ban.

As a general rule, I am not one for The Project, but I clicked and watched and listened to your gift for articulation mixed with raw honesty and frankness. I don’t think you do, write or say anything to be “liked” but it is a privilege to share in this insight of you and your life and indeed, it is a gift to many who strongly and deeply feel loss, particularly for one where there is no goodbye or run up to the moment. Most sincere best wishes Gideon, I trust and hope Jaz’s story is better out than in. Thank you for all that you do through your gift for the written and spoken word.

Should a moral stance only be taken when we think the govt. or entity will pay attention, then? Might as well give up! Should groups be allowed to disregard the rules of the competition they have signed up to, without penalty? Do we not care where the ICC money that was earmarked for women's cricket in Afghanistan is going? Is a policy 'futile' because it doesn't work within the first six months?

Your position does not seem tenable.
