I’ve so far gone along with the standard analysis on Smith’s recent relative decline. That is that he relies on an exceptional eye rather than technique. As he gets older, the eye inevitably deteriorates and the technique isn’t as good as compensation.
So it will be fascinating to see how he goes as opener. I wouldn’t bet against him.
Smith is only 34 which isn’t really that old for a top tier batter. You’d think he has at least 2-3 years left. I think the point about age/vision vs odd technique is a very good one. Most players when nearing retirement say it isn’t the physical things that push them to retirement it’s the mental ones - losing the desire for training, etc…so this is a way to refresh Smith’s motivation.
Also, Smith’s record seems to be better when we lose a few quick top order wickets for not much vs when he comes in at 2-200.
If this experiment doesn’t work for West Indies, then will they continue it for NZ series? (probably yes), and all the way to India 5 test series (doubtful but maybe no other choice)
Think this will workout for Smith quite well, only thing I will say is, now you guys will have two openers who will be scoring at a very slow pace. and then Marnus comes in next. wont that be putting too much pressure on Green, Head? 3/4 wickets down for not very much.?
I'll be surprised if this works. The other thing with Smith's recent decline has also been his snails pace scoring which perhaps he thinks he'll be able to get away with opening. Also interesting - if Smith fails and Green prospers at 4 - then what happens. It could be the end of Smith in test cricket.
Smith is a fidgety genius. He will find a way to make it work. The word that has not been used is determination. It is his determination that will get him over the line.
The “problem solver” bit is interesting.
I think that when he looks to remove modes of dismissals, he also removes attacking shots and gets himself into a rut.
I think his lower recent average (just mid 40s!!) has been more a mindset change from “how do I score on this pitch” to “how do i not get out”.
Nice piece as always.

I just don't understand how Cameron Green gets picked again after doing SFA from when he was dropped. He's played ONE Shield match since!
They told Renshaw and Bancroft they needed to 'knock the door down' and Bancroft pretty much did. Green hasn't even rung the doorbell!
Yet he's the guy they open the door to, back into the penthouse...
Well let's face it, he's never really left it.
The song lyrics is a great analogy.

Any thoughts on the recent test, Gids?
