He has bought it on himself. Just hope he can back it up in the second dig. And moving forward learn from his mistakes. If AB says he is cocky then he is cocky.

Got to disagree with the sentiment here. If I’m Ronnie I’m backing him publicly at every point, while in private having a quiet chat about knowing your limitations. Same if I’m India with some of their young stars who are a bit rough around the edges.

Agree. Even in private, McDonald’s first thought should be “is this gonna affect Sam’s confidence?” Then you go from there depending how he is reacting and how you think it’s affecting Sam and the opposition.

Was he asked whether he thought Konstas should have got involved in a verbal spat with Bumrah prior to that?

Spot on, shithousery all round.

Not a big fan of send offs, and not seen one for a non-striker before, but there’s a really good way to overcome them; score a shit-ton of runs and win the match…

This struck me as HR in the workplace speak and proactive covering of their tracks against future litigation if the whole Konstas experiment goes south.

Cricket Australia were sued by Nathan Bracken for lack of duty of care in managing him as a worker through injuries accrued in the work place weren’t they or is that just a rumour?

If Konstas was psychologically injured in the workplace and CA did nothing about it and were seen to do nothing about it, they could perceive they are open to a compensation claim in the future.

I think it is an absolute load of codswallop and I was surprised to see this press conference but that is what I thought.

I think it is cynical and sad and thought Kohli assaulting Konstas in the workplace and being handed a wet slap on the wrist was weak but here we are-we have a 19 year old employee being subjected to all sorts in the workplace and what are we doing about it? I think Konstas is giving as good as he gets but this comes back to the mythical “line” and the crossing thereof, can stuff like this happen in what is a workplace and the employer do nothing about it?

Interesting reading other takes. I took from it that McDonald was pointing out the standard the ICC have now excepted. Given this has attracted no interest from match referee it appears non-striker is fair game. I'm not suggesting there is anyone worth targeting in this way but if Australia were guilty of "excessive celebration" to the non-striker it is clearly a victimless crime.

Konstas will no doubt pull his head in a little, but I have yet to see how he was to blame for the little run in with Bumrah. Or why the man with the test average of 46 seems so threatened by a young upstart.

I might just note that yesterday Boland gave Reddy a very nice send off, nothing bad, but he certainly let him know how pleased he was.

I’m not sure we know exactly what happened between bumrah and konstas before the blow up….some frustration from bumrah abt last over time wasting, but do know what was said?

I’m still with Chappelli and later Warney who reckoned the coach was what got the team to and fro. Sometimes the hypocrisy of our team bleating about anything everything surprises me, but not often.

Good drama - with that said hopefully the senior players can give some guidance

Wouldn’t it be great if the young fella hit the winning runs

Fair play. Theres a meme on the internet: fuck around and find out. Seems to fit the bill here.

Pretty rich on McD’s part. Konstas got what he deserved having taken an active and unnecessary part in stirring up Bumrah in particular. The coach should be advising not encouraging him.

With apologies to @peterlalor, I read his brief article but skipped the footage link. I just went back over it and watched. I had just seen a general carry on when I had watched previous clips and hadn’t seen the targeted sprint by Kohli to get right in Konstas’s face. Wow, that was pretty full on!!!

Also just had a giggle to myself thinking about what Ian Chappell would think of Andrew’s press conference.

I think Chappelli would have similar thoughts to McDonald, just without the “HR speak”, as you called it.

Maybe in the 70s they would do it in a laughing way, less earnest, but the essence of McDonald’s actions were “just want to make sure my young player is ready to go next innings”.

Let me hazard a guess, Chappelli would be grumpy!

Ah, the old magician's trick of deception by distraction. "McDonald questions Indians" rolls off the tongue much easier than "McDonald questions Konstas". Like "WTF do you think you're doing kid? The only thing that unites that rabble is their dislike of a lippy punk." Watching Konstas is like watching motor racing to see what will send the cars flaming into the barriers this week. Pass.
