Howard Felperin inspired a few of us in Melb Uni’s English course to read way more widely ... but that’s one weird book he wrote. Talk about spite! I think he said Australia not worth bothering about. Did he use a Gertrude Stein phrase, there’s no there there? Scuz will know
A random golf foursome offers plenty of scope for conversation and discovery. Less companions but much more available time and close contact walking between shots. Playing Royal Oslo on opening day with ice still floating in the lakes I was paired with a geologist back home on holiday from the NW Shelf. I've played with singer Lloyd Cole (a charming erudite companion). Alice Cooper and Bill Murray are dedicated golfers. At a local level there's grand company in Mike Clayton, John Harms and Anson Cameron tells a witty tale of playing a round with 5x British Open winner Peter Thomson (or more tellingly playing around with his daughter). I would add Daniel Andrews and Richard Marles - but I don't want to make you bristle.

Lukey from the seconds is a very wise man.
Rest in peace Damo. I didn’t know he’d died till reading this. What a legend he was.
