Gideon offers just praise to Joe Root. Imagine what England could have done during last year’s Ashes if Root hadn’t been momentarily seduced by Bazball…
I think that the mistakes he made against Australia and India, combined with the successes he had trying to score at a faster rate, all combined to create this current golden run of form - he's a batting genius, who learns something from every innings, good and bad. Or maybe I'm post-facto rationalising. Either way, he's a joy to watch.
Joe Root is undoubtedly in great form right now. But, still Steve Smith has a better average. An average of 57 is exceptional in test cricket if you have played that long. And for a long period of time his average was beyond 60 which is will be unheard of in future. Root is bound to score more runs and 100s if he plays more. It is like Allan Border had most runs at on point of time for more than a decadebecause he played more amount of test matches.
Kohli is exceptional and can't be compared to these three. His numbers in white ball cricket are astronomical in comparison to these three. If you are judging a best batsman then you need to keep all three formats into account or else point out specifically that Root is the best test batsman.
However, this question can only be answered once everyone finishes their careers.
Interesting how the #1 ranking fluctuates over the years. For years Smith and Kohli seemed to alternate at the top of the pile, with Kane Williamson close and Root just down the list. It seemed Root was never likely to unseat these three, but now he has.
Joe is also rated the ICC #3rd ranked all-rounder in Test cricket. This is somebody havin a laff, surely? Ashwin is No 1 and Stokes is at #7.

Great writing and a sublime piece of art work by Fisher Classics.
